You, Me, and a dog named Biscuit
I spent half of my life regretting.
There was a dog named Bambi. Bambi is an old female miniature schnauzer who is partially blind. One day, Bambi's owner decided to go on a holiday and thus left Bambi under the care of a friend, Ting. Ting was how excited. She called up her partner, Emily who rushed down in a cab to share the fun and excitement. They then spent the next one week fussing over Bambi, cuddling all together, and bringing it down for walks. There was one thunderstorm night occasion, Ting told Emily to stay at her place to accompany Bambi because she wants to go clubbing. And Emily got how angry, and spent the entire night playing and talking to the dog until she comes home in the most ungodly time at 3am.
One week later, they had to return Bambi back to her owner.
Since then, Emily couldn't stop making visits to petshops and whining about wanting a dog but she knows it can never happen because of her annoying and irritating parents who think she can never take responsibility. She even decided, if she ever have a dog of her own, she's going to call it "Biscuit". What a cutesy name ! She started making up an imaginary dog together with Ting and they would talk non-stop about Biscuit.
One fine night... after chicken rice dinner at Thomson Road, Ting said,
" Huh.. I think your mother won't allow you to keep a dog. Lets stop thinking about it. We go buy hamsters okay ?! "
" Hamster so small. Hamsters are for kids la. We how old already, still want to keep hamsters. Buy dog la ! ", Emily snapped.
" WHO SAY HAMSTERS SMALL MEANS FOR KIDS. OKAY LOR, LIKE THAT RIGHT, NEXT TIME WHEN WE ARE 80 YEARS OLD, WE MUST KEEP ELEPHANTS LOR, RIGHT ? BIG ALREADY MUST KEEP BIG ANIMAL WHATTT ! "
What a brainless statement.
Months later, Ting received news about Bambi giving birth to several puppies ! She paid the puppies a visit and immediately fell for this particular cutesie puppy. Ting then waited for 6 more weeks before bringing that puppy home and calling it " their dog ". Oh what lovely birds in the sky ! Ting became goodie good girl and stopped clubbing but spent her every night at home playing with Biscuit. " I am in charge of playing with Biscuit. You are in charge of toilet training it and cleaning the shit. ", she told Emily. And because she had to go for work in the noon, Emily will be over at her place to train Biscuit. " Biscuit... come here okay.", " No, Biscuit you cannot pee pee here. Who say you can pee pee here ? ". Everybody in the house was happy and showered Biscuit with all the love. Biscuit was really tiny and was the most obedient pup on earth. He'd sit quietly in a corner and stone and look most adorable. Hahahaha. But... Biscuit kept scratching. His ears and his face, they all (including Ting's family) wondered what's wrong and they brought it to the vet.
Biscuit had skin disease.
Poor Biscuit. Ting's mother then bought all the possible medication for it but there was no improvement. It pained Ting and Emily so much to see Biscuit scratch in agony. One night, Emily decided to finally bring it back home with her, only to get chased out of her house because " NO DOGS ALLOWED." She ended up taking a cab back to Ting's house with Biscuit in her Roxy bag. Oh how hard she cried.
Weeks passed. Ting's mother don't really fancy the idea of a dog at home because that means extra chore. After much thoughts and disputes between Ting and Emily, they decided to sell Biscuit to the petshop. It wasn't easy for them. Both were most upset. Including everybody at home too. They sold it to a petshop in hope of the best owner giving Biscuit a better life.
Today, Emily came across a photo of Biscuit taken by Ting 2 and a half years ago. She sat down on her bed, all filled with regrets and sadness. And witnessed emotions filled to the brim. The missing wasn't easy. Not at all.
So much love and misses. And a bucket full of regrets.
